Test Engineer

After speaking with hundreds of recruiters, QA leaders, and highly successful test engineers, we found a clear north star. This guide is built around what we learned from real test engineer resume examples.

Here’s what you’ll take away from this guide:

  • See what a strong test engineer resume looks like.
  • Use a resume layout example that works well.
  • Create a resume header summary with good and bad examples.
  • Write your resume experience in a way that helps you stand out.

How to write a test engineer resume

First, think about who will read your resume.

Typically, three people help decide whether you get an interview:

  • Recruiter
  • Head of development, VPE, or CTO
  • QA lead

Each of them reviews resumes differently based on their background and what they consider most important:

  • Recruiters often have a limited understanding of technology, so they usually filter resumes using a few important keywords.
  • A Head of development, VPE, or CTO will want to see that you can enumerate test cases, scale your work, show the team workflows you have worked with, and demonstrate analytical thinking around designs.
  • A QA lead will look for all of the above, but will also check whether your testing resume skills closely match the role and whether you have practically demonstrated soft skills in the workplace.

If you are wondering how your resume should look, try one of our resume templates to find one that fits your needs.

If it helps, the most important sections of a test engineer resume are:

  • Resume objective or resume summary
  • Your experience as a test engineer
  • Your technical skill set and soft skills
  • Your relevant certifications

How to write a test engineer resume summary

This is something many RF test engineers and software test engineers struggle with, and that is understandable. Summarizing yourself in 2–3 lines is not easy, especially if you are not a copywriter.

Before we show you some test engineer resume summary examples, here is what makes a good resume summary:

  • It should be impressive and reflect your passion as a test engineer.
  • It should include important keywords that help recruiters identify you as the right candidate.
  • If possible, mention your industry vertical, such as BFSI, Healthcare, or Airline.

Here are two examples of a typical test engineer resume summary.

Summary

Dedicated Test Engineer with excellent technical, analytical, and communication skills, demonstrated through 9 years of experience.

WRONG

Summary

Software test engineer with 11+ years of experience in an agile development environment for Windows applications. Sets up and maintains a VMware virtual machine server. Uses automation tools including Visual Studio Coded UI, Mouse and Keyboard Recorder, and Quick Test Pro. Writes release notes, acceptance test plans, traceability matrices, and other documents using Excel, Word, and Outlook. Works with SQL, Oracle, and Access databases.

RIGHT

The second example looks a little better and gives more context, but it still is not strong enough. For a role that involves explaining things clearly, the summary focuses too much on skills instead of showing actual contributions to the company’s business goals.

A QA Lead we spoke with also said that if she sees “MS word” listed in a resume summary, she rejects the candidate immediately.

Now, take a look at this example.

Summary

Software test engineer with 11+ years of experience in agile development environments, specializing in Windows applications in the healthcare space. Responsible for test strategy and test automation using tools such as Visual Studio Coded UI and Quick Test Pro, contributing to $350,000 in annual savings and a 75% reduction in lead time.

RIGHT

Software Test Engineer Summary Template

Notice the difference here: this candidate still included their tech stack, excluding the obvious tools, while putting extra emphasis on their strongest career results.

If writing your own summary still feels difficult and you are worried it may not come out well, use this template as a copy-paste-replace starting point:

“[# of years] years of work experience as a software test engineer for [Your software/industry]. A proven leader and expert in design, analysis and implementation of testing plans and strategies using [tool], [tool], [tool], that led to [business result expressed with numbers]. Highly passionate about how testing improves [e.g. UX] of [e.g. mobile applications]”

How to write a test engineer resume experience section

Whether the reader is a recruiter, a tech lead, or someone on the QA team, the experts we spoke with consistently highlighted the same qualities in a strong test engineer resume experience section:

  • Data collection and pattern analysis
  • Ability to build testing strategies from scratch and choose the right tests
  • Automation testing procedures and reducing variables
  • Communication skills that support smooth workflows
  • End-to-end testing capabilities, especially the ability to anticipate everything through UAT

But most test engineers write their resume experience like this:

Experience

Sr. Test Engineer

Infoanalytica

02/2015 - 11/2019 · Jacksonville, FL

Managed Infoanalytica’s testing department and oversaw all related activities. Responsibilities as a Senior Test Engineer included:

  • Ran weekly tests to review the state of the software.
  • Implemented test automation for the product suite.
  • Wrote and updated detailed documentation for the testing department.
  • Worked with other departments to deliver end-to-end solutions.
  • Handled all communications involving the testing department.
WRONG

Now, take a look at this instead.

Experience

Sr. Test Engineer

Infoanalytica

02/2015 - 11/2019 | Jacksonville, FL

The main goal of the project was to admit patients suffering from a disease and conduct research on those patients in an agile environment.

  • Saved 30% of testing time and cost through automation.
  • Implemented automation using Selenium WebDriver, core JAVA, Maven, and TestNG.
  • Extensively automated regression and functional test suites.
  • Implemented a hybrid framework from scratch to represent web pages.
  • Used Maven to execute automation suites in parallel across different platforms and browser combinations.
  • Communicated directly with the client on testing activities and coordinated with the offshore team.
  • Performed defect tracking and management in JIRA.
RIGHT

If you specialize in a specific testing technology, consider adding resume bullet points like these.

Experience

Software Test Engineer

WebMD

02/2015 - 11/2019 · Boston, MA

Independently implemented test suites for WebMD's large-scale CMS to support 1M+ pages and led the migration to Confluence.

  • Conducted meetings with stakeholders and vertical owners to establish testing standards and exceed business goals across marketing, finance, engineering, and design.
  • Researched a unique set of test cases based on internal processes to address content management, localization, SEO, and content strategies, resulting in $250,000 in savings over 2 years.
  • Used FSD and application mockups to create test cases that ensured high-quality workflows and reduced lead times.
  • Scripted test plans, test scripts, and processes that removed previously known redundancy by 40% and ensured predictable outcomes.
RIGHT

The last two test engineer resume examples are more effective because the reader can clearly understand your skills, tools, and workflows. By contrast, someone reading the first resume experience section would struggle to answer:

  • What tools did you use?
  • What team size did you work on?
  • What product were you responsible for?
  • What results did you deliver?

When writing your test engineer resume experience, make sure it’s relevant to the job role. No matter who reviews your resume, they will try to determine whether your background matches the position.

Test engineer resume skills are a must have for a winning job application

Why does it matter to separate your skills into a dedicated section? The answer is readability and habit. HR professionals often look for this section by default when reviewing resumes. It also helps to mention your most important skills several times throughout your resume—in the summary, the experience section, and a separate skills section—so recruiters are more likely to notice exactly what you want to highlight.

16 skills for your test engineer resume

  • Programming skills in Java, Python, PHP, and Ruby on Rails.
  • Familiarity with automation frameworks such as Selenium.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Root cause analysis.
  • Corrective actions.
  • Manual testing.
  • Testing strategy.
  • Bug discovery and debugging.
  • Documentation.
  • Release management.
  • UAT.
  • Test case creation.
  • Continuous improvement.
  • Reduction in product lead times.
  • Experience with bug tracking tools such as JIRA and PVCS.
  • Familiarity with IDEs such as Eclipse.

You don’t have to list a multitude of skills. Focus on the ones you actually have and that already appear in the job description.

Now that you have four sections polished, let’s look at the last important part of your resume: certifications.

How to list resume certifications on your resume

You have a few options for listing certifications on your resume: in your resume headline as an addendum to your job title, in your resume summary, or in a separate section.

We recommend using a separate section if you have more than one important and relevant certification. Otherwise, a simple abbreviation in the sections mentioned above will do the job. Recruiters will know what it means.

Some test engineer certifications that are highly recognized and valued by employers are:

  • CAST – Certified Associate in Software Testing by QAI.
  • CSTE – Certified Software Test Engineer by QAI.
  • ISQTB.
  • HP HP0-M102 for UFT version 12.0.
  • CASTP-P and CASTP-M.

Key takeaways:

  • Your resume may be reviewed by a recruiter, Engineering Lead, or QA Lead.

  • Your resume summary should be extremely impactful.

  • Strong resume experience should be highly specific to the role you’re applying for.

  • Add your skills and certifications in a separate section to help you stand out.
