“Should I de-prioritize my SQL experience for a Mongodb position, or should I drop it altogether?”

“What if I worked with SQL my whole life and only recently transitioned to mongo?”

If you are building a new Mongodb resume, you have likely asked yourself these questions and more.

We did the research, and the answers are below. Read on for our guide to writing your best Mongodb resume.

With Our Mongodb Resume Guide, You Will Learn:

  • How to create a resume that highlights your experience with NoSQL databases in the most effective way
  • 8+ Mongodb resume examples that can help convince recruiters you’re the right person for the job
  • Which skills to include on your Mongodb resume and how to make sure they stand out
  • What you need to know to improve your resume header and summary
  • Tips and tricks for presenting your education and certificates
  • Which jobs call for prioritizing or de-prioritizing your Mongodb NoSQL experience

Where Should You Put Mongodb on Resume?

It depends. There are several good places to include Mongodb experience on your resume. Consider these factors:

  • The position you are applying for
  • The company you are applying for

The position you are applying for

System Administrator, Full Stack Developer, Business Analyst, and Database Administrator roles often require knowledge of Mongodb, although the level of expertise varies widely by position.

For example, Database Administrator jobs require working experience with Mongodb databases. In that case, highlight it in both the experience section and the summary sections of your resume.

If you are applying for certain System Administrator or Business Analyst positions, Mongodb proficiency may be a preferred addition rather than a core requirement. At minimum, mention it in your technical skills.

The company you are applying for

Some companies place more emphasis on Mongodb knowledge. In some environments, System Administrator responsibilities are combined with Database Administrator responsibilities.

When that happens, working knowledge of Mongodb, and often several other databases, becomes a requirement. Make sure that experience appears clearly in the experience section of your resume.

You can also see these requirements in web-based startup roles. The main advantages of NoSQL databases are flexibility and scalability.

Mongodb is the most popular database according to the DB-Engine global ranking.

So when startups hire Full Stack Developers, for example, Mongodb expertise is often one of the first skills they look for in a successful candidate.

So, how do you structure your resume and what template to use?

These sections are associated with successful Mongodb resumes

  • Include a header.
  • Add a professional summary.
  • List your experience.
  • Include education and certifications.
  • Highlight your skills.

Let’s move on and look at what it takes to get each of these sections right.

Here’s Why You Need a Proper Mongodb Resume Header

You should spend time on your Mongodb resume header.

Let’s take a look at a generic one.

This is what your resume header probably looks like.

A few improvements come to mind:

  • Use the header to show examples of your previous work. Links are a great option.
  • Include at least one more way to contact you.
  • Be especially careful to include the Mongodb keyword in the title.

Study the company and the position to understand whether Mongodb is a primary or supplementary skill for the role.

Even though MongoDB is one of this candidate’s top skills, you may choose to omit it for some roles to avoid creating bias or confusion.

Now let’s look at the same example again for a Database Admin role, where MongoDB is an essential skill.

If you’re applying to a startup that runs in a NoSQL environment, highlighting MongoDB can help show you’re a strong fit for the role, especially if the rest of your resume supports that same direction.

How to Make an Impact with Mongodb Resume Summary

When writing a resume summary for your Mongodb resume, two factors can make the biggest difference: priority and relevance.

First, check whether Mongodb is listed as a primary skill or simply a preferred one for the job you want.

If the company needs a Database Administrator for a hybrid environment but emphasizes another database cluster, such as PostgreSQL or Oracle SQL, leading your summary with Mongodb experience may not be the best approach.

From the job description: the company is looking for a database administration and development professional for its database team. This person will be responsible for the current database environments, Oracle, MS SQL, MySQL, and Mongodb.

Summary

MongoDB Certified Administrator with 5+ years of experience administering MongoDB databases. Experienced in overseeing the maintenance of serverless environments and assisting with the preparation, deployment, and maintenance of production databases, including Postgre, SQLite, and Cassandra.

WRONG

It’s better to show that you have diverse experience across several databases and environments.

Summary

Certified DBA with 5+ years of comprehensive experience coding, deploying, preparing, and administering database solutions across SQL and NoSQL environments, including OracleSQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, SQLite, Cassandra, and others.

RIGHT

If the company you’re applying to is specifically hiring a MongoDB DBA, then knowledge of other databases serves as a complement to your core MongoDB expertise.

Summary

Highly qualified MongoDB Administrator with 3+ years of experience in MongoDB environments, including scaling, upgrading, migration, load balancing, and designing and developing complex MongoDB solutions for large-scale, diverse systems.

RIGHT

How to Include Mongodb Experience on Your Resume

Database Administrators are not hired to showcase which specific tools they know.

Experience

MongoDB Database Developer

Data Solutions Ltd

02/2017 - 05/2019 | Boston, MA

  • Proficient in Oracle 18c, Visio, Apache HTTP, and C++
  • Experience using Windows Server 2003-2016
  • Strong SQL, T-SQL, and DTS/SSIS skills
WRONG

Database administrators are hired to solve specific problems, such as scaling existing solutions, migrating and optimizing them, or building new ones.

In many cases, the job description makes the main focus of the role clear. Here is a snippet from a real job description:

  • Focus on optimizing database systems for performance and reliability.
  • Administer and oversee the maintenance of SQL Server and other databases.
  • Optimize database systems for performance and reliability.
  • Query optimization and tuning. Read, analyze, interpret, and respond to execution plans by creating supporting DB objects and making or recommending specific optimization and refactoring changes.
  • Provide database performance analysis resulting in specific actionable recommendations.

These first five lines make it clear that the role is largely focused on optimizing and maintaining the existing infrastructure.

That is why it helps to highlight the most relevant experience in the first few bullet points of your resume’s experience section. You should also scan the job description for keywords you can use in your resume. Just avoid being repetitive, and make sure your resume reflects different aspects of your work.

Experience

MongoDB Database Developer

Data Solutions Ltd

02/2017 - 05/2019 | Boston, MA

  • Configured, optimized, and supported a high-availability MongoDB replication cluster.
  • Optimized MongoDB CRUD operations.
  • Monitored deployments for capacity, performance, and reliability.
  • Identified, troubleshot, and resolved live MongoDB issues.
RIGHT

SQL and NoSQL Experience

MongoDB emerged in 2009, which is relatively recent compared with more traditional SQL solutions. As a result, many database administrators and companies now have experience working in both SQL and NoSQL environments.

That also means experience with both approaches is commonly expected in job descriptions and portfolios.

Although SQL and NoSQL share many similarities, they use different terminology and offer different advantages.

When describing your experience with both SQL and NoSQL databases, be careful not to apply terminology from one database approach to the other.

Experience

Database Administrator

Data Solutions Ltd

02/2017 - 05/2019 | Boston, MA

  • Installed and ran MongoDB with multiple instances on servers.
  • Configured table queries, columns, and other administrative operations such as grouping, indexing, and joining.
WRONG

Terms like tables, columns, grouping, and joining belong to a SQL environment.

In a NoSQL environment, the equivalent of tables is collections, columns are fields, and grouping is referred to as aggregation.

A non-technical recruiter may overlook these distinctions, but to someone with technical experience, using the wrong terminology can make you seem inexperienced.

The main exception is when you use GUI tools that translate SQL queries into a MongoDB environment, such as NoSQLBooster or SQL Query.

If a job description does not explicitly mention that workflow, it is usually better to present your SQL and NoSQL experience as separate types of work.

Experience

Database Administrator

Data Solutions Ltd

02/2017 - 05/2019 | Boston, MA

  • Administered and maintained SQL Server and other databases, including MongoDB and Cassandra.
  • Configured SQL Server monitoring utilities to reduce false alarms and monitored SQL Server jobs.
  • Migrated existing MongoDB clusters to new AWS infrastructure.
RIGHT

If you are applying for a Full Stack Developer position, MongoDB proficiency is often just one part of a broader workflow.

In this context, MongoDB typically works alongside back-end and front-end technologies such as React, Node.js, CSS, and HTML, so a strong resume should reflect experience working in a diverse technical environment.

Experience

Full-Stack Developer

Data Solutions Ltd

02/2017 - 05/2019 · Boston, MA

  • Developed full-stack web applications using React, NodeJS, and NoSQL in distributed serverless and cloud environments.
  • Identified and documented areas of the codebase that required refactoring.
  • Performed refactoring with minimal impact on existing functionality.
  • Modified existing NodeJS code and the MongoDB cluster to move data from one system to another.
RIGHT

You can’t realistically list every skill tied to your MongoDB experience section, and you shouldn’t try. If you do, your resume can start to read like a glossary from an O'Reilly book.

Use a dedicated skill section instead, and focus on the abilities that will make your resume stand out.

Should You Have a Skill Section on a Mongodb Resume?

While developers often share similar soft skills, technical skill sets can vary widely depending on the role that requires MongoDB database knowledge. Here are the most important items to include in your resume skill section.

Listing your soft skills on your Mongodb resume

Developers rarely work in isolation, so teamwork and communication are essential soft skills, especially when applying to an enterprise-level organization with multiple divisions and team-based projects.

10 soft skills to include on a Mongodb resume

  • Communication helps you explain technical ideas clearly.
  • Teamwork shows you can collaborate effectively with others.
  • Approachability reflects a professional and easy-to-work-with attitude.
  • Detail-Oriented highlights your focus on accuracy and consistency.
  • Analytical demonstrates strong problem-solving and critical thinking.
  • Business-Focused shows you understand broader organizational goals.
  • Adaptability proves you can adjust to changing tools and priorities.
  • Negotiation supports productive discussions and better outcomes.
  • Patience is valuable when solving issues and working through challenges.
  • Flexibility shows you can handle different tasks and evolving needs.

A strong resume should not list skills without evidence, and the same applies to soft skills.

Instead of naming them on their own, include a few examples that show how you have used those skills in practice.

You can do this in a dedicated achievements or talents section, or weave those examples into your work experience and summary.

Strengths

Active listening
By interviewing the marketing team and analyzing their pain points, I built a new data performance report that reduced the total time needed to generate weekly reports by 50%.
Communication
Regular lecturer for MongoDB local event groups, with 1000 total participants. For the past three years, I have led the final 2-hour Q&A session.
Adaptability
My team at ABC company was restructured twice last year due to changes in leadership and business models. My work was not affected, even though I had to adapt to a completely different team and environment.
RIGHT

How to include your technical skills

It’s important to include the right technical skills in your MongoDB resume. During the first stage of the hiring process, ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems) scan for keywords that match the job description.

As long as you stay truthful and list the skills you actually have that also appear in the job posting, you’ll be in a strong position to move to the next stage.

Here are the technical skills most often expected from Mongo Database Administrators.

17 technical skills to reflect your technical awareness as a DBA

  • MongoDB experience demonstrates hands-on database knowledge.
  • Linux proficiency supports database administration in server environments.

Do I Need Education Or Certification Sections in My Mongodb Resume?

There’s no way to discuss education on a Mongodb resume without mentioning Mongodb University.

The platform passed 1 mln registrations in July 2018 and provides a structured curriculum for developers around the world who want to dive into NoSQL databases.

Formal education exposes you to different experiences, helps you build a network, and teaches transferable skills. You may also have completed relevant course work during your studies, so it’s worth including.

At the same time, database development is a niche you can enter largely through self-teaching.

If you do have formal education, you can list it in a separate education section. Include:

  • The name of the institution
  • The study time period
  • The degree
  • The GPA score, if relevant

Even if you didn't finish your education, that experience may still be worth mentioning.

Education

MS in Computer Science
University of Chicago
09/2008 - 11/2013
GPA: 3.9 / 4.0

RIGHT

If you have more than two certifications and they are directly relevant to the job, it makes sense to give them a separate section.

Be sure to include:

  • The name of the certificate
  • The year you were certified
  • The certifying institution

Certifications

  • MongoDB Developer Certification

    MongoDB University, 2018

  • MongoDB DBA Certification

    MongoDB University, 2015

  • Oracle NoSQL Certification

    Oracle University, 2013

RIGHT

Final Takeaways

  • Decide whether MongoDB experience is essential or simply an added advantage for the role you’re applying for, and present your experience and summary accordingly.
  • Use precise terminology when describing your SQL and NoSQL experience.
  • In your experience section, emphasize the problems you solved and the workflows behind those solutions instead of only listing technical skills. Reserve the skills section for the tools and technologies themselves.
  • Prioritize MongoDB experience that is specifically requested for the role, such as scaling, optimization, or migration.
