How to build an impressive Walmart resume and wow recruiters

This may surprise new jobseekers, but writing your resume is usually one of the last things you do—possibly second to last, if submitting it is the final step.

What comes before that? Research. Lots of research.

The days of using one resume for multiple applications are long gone. Now, you need to tailor your resume not only to each company, but also to each position.

That means researching both the company and the role you want. A good rule of thumb is to start with the bigger picture by learning the company’s mission and values.

Walmart’s mission statement goes as follows:

We help people save money, so they can live better.

—Walmart

This is also reflected in the company’s values:

  • Guided by good
  • Service to the customer
  • Respect for the individual
  • Strive for excellence
  • Act with integrity

Why do these matter? Because they shape the company culture, and cultural fit is often a decisive factor when narrowing down candidates.

Remember, job searching is a two-way street. Recruiters are vetting candidates, but you are also evaluating the employer.

Walmart also emphasizes inclusivity and equal opportunity, even if you have a criminal record or lack traditional education.

Next, research the available job positions. Walmart and, by extension, Sam’s Club offer the following career paths:

  • Stores & Clubs
  • Corporate
  • Healthcare
  • Technology
  • Drivers & Distribution Centers

Once you find a position you like, make a note of the job description. It will be useful when you start filling out the work experience section. More on this later in the guide.

PRO TIP

Nobody can tick every box all the time, but you should at least meet the basic job requirements.

The minimum age requirement is 16 for Walmart and 18 for Sam’s Club. That can be good news for students, but keep in mind that you still may not be considered for some positions.

For example, you may not be able to cover certain shifts, or you may not have the required training, such as a Forklift Operator license.

Choose the Right Resume Format and Submission Setup

Before you start writing your resume, complete two tasks first:

  • Write down the relevant skills and experience you can offer, supported by examples.
  • Choose the right resume format for your background.

There are three main formats to consider:

The reverse-chronological format is the traditional option and is often preferred by hiring managers because its structure is familiar and easy to follow.

If you have substantial professional experience, this is usually the best choice. Include only relevant roles, and do not go back more than 10 years.

If you are changing careers, think carefully before making the switch. Walmart hiring managers advise candidates to consider these moves seriously, since you may be significantly underqualified for some positions. If you are committed to the change, the hybrid format is usually the best fit because it highlights transferable skills and experience.

If you have no formal work history, the functional resume can work well. It emphasizes your education and abilities rather than your employment record, giving you room to include side projects and volunteer work. Even without work experience, showing the right mindset for the company can help your application stand out.

As for resume length, Walmart recruiters have not published a specific recommendation. A one-page resume is generally the safest option. Because the company is large and competition is strong, keep your content concise and focused.

You should also check for role-specific submission rules. For example, Walmart does not accept paper applications for hourly positions.

There is some flexibility with attachments: the company’s career portal accepts up to 5 attachments with a variety of file extensions.

If you want to apply to more than one location, you must submit a separate application for each one. In general, Walmart keeps your application on file for up to 60 days, giving you two months to update your job preferences or apply to a different location.

Now that you know the format options and submission basics, the next step is to decide how to structure your resume.

Must-have sections for your Walmart resume:

  • Add a header with your contact information and links to your portfolio or social profiles.
  • Include a resume objective or summary that highlights your biggest accomplishments.
  • Create an experience section to describe your relevant work history.
  • Add a skills section to showcase your social and technical abilities.
  • Include an education and certificates section to show you have the necessary qualifications.
  • Add extra sections as needed to supplement your resume.

Simple enough, right?

Once the structure is in place, the next step is substance. Sometimes, a framework alone is not enough to spark ideas for what to include.

Take a look at the table below. It brings together a list of questions to focus on while writing.

What are recruiters interested in knowing about you?

  • Be ready to explain your biggest accomplishment and how you achieved it.
  • Share a challenge you had to overcome, how you handled it, and what you learned from it.
  • Prepare to introduce yourself clearly and concisely.
  • Expect questions about a mistake you made, how you resolved it, and whether you discussed it with your manager or colleagues.
  • Recruiters may ask how well you work in a team.
  • Be prepared to discuss how you handle disagreements with colleagues and whether you try to resolve them yourself.
  • Explain why you want to work for Walmart.
  • Describe what you enjoy most about working in your desired role.
  • Show why you believe you would be a great fit for the team.

After you’ve compiled your resume, the next step is to complete the online application process. It usually takes up to an hour to finish. Depending on the position you’ve chosen, there may also be extra assessments, which can make the process longer.

Now, let’s go through each section one by one.

How to turn the resume header into your very own business card

Why think of it as a business card? Because it’s the first thing hiring managers see when they look at your resume. While it may only contain your contact information, it communicates much more than that.

Your resume header can reveal things like your attention to detail and your ability to communicate effectively. That’s why presentation matters.

What should you include in your resume header?

  • Full name
  • Job title (current or preferred)
  • Address
  • Phone number
  • Email
  • Portfolio
  • Business social media profiles (LinkedIn, GitHub, etc.)

Check carefully for typos or missing information, and make sure every link you add works.

Take a look at the sample resume headers we’ve prepared for you.

3 Walmart resume header examples

For this guide, we’ve chosen Anya Kennedy’s draft resume. She agreed to share how her resume-writing process went.

This is what her header looked like at first. Do you notice anything out of place?

Probably the most glaring mistake is Anya’s email address. We all remember the random email accounts we registered when we were younger, but nothing looks less professional than an address like sweetpotato99@gmail.com.

This is part of the research and preparation process: you should have all your assets ready before you need them.

Another issue is the vague job title. “Operator” can refer to many different roles, so don’t make hiring managers guess. Remove ambiguity from your resume.

You should also include your phone number. Even if the Walmart location is just down the street, recruiters still need a reliable way to contact you. Always provide at least two methods of contact.

Listing your portfolio and business social media accounts is optional, but it can help you make a stronger impression.

With that in mind, check out the edited version of Anya’s resume header:

Much, much better!

You may find it strange that Anya, as a Cashier Manager, has a website, but it could be a side business she is rightfully proud of.

Why list it at all?

A side project, while not completely related to the position, can still show character. If she has the know-how to run a business, then she is more than qualified to manage teams.

It demonstrates organization, time management, task delegation, budgeting, and planning abilities.

Who wouldn’t find that impressive?

Here is another sample resume header:

In this example, Anya lists her LinkedIn instead of a personal website. Does that make a difference? Yes.

Anya The Pharmacist may not have her own website, but LinkedIn still lets her show her involvement in the pharmaceutical industry. She can update conferences, webinars, and certificates in real time, while also using the profile to showcase her credentials without being limited by resume layout.

Consider the role you want and curate your header accordingly.

What makes your Walmart resume really stand out: the summary

The summary is one of the few resume sections with a bit more flexibility, so use it to your advantage.

Show your character. Explain how you can help Walmart achieve its mission and goals, and give recruiters a sense of how you think.

If you do not have experience, do not worry. There is a version of the summary designed for new professionals: the resume objective.

What is the difference between a resume summary and an objective?

Experienced professionals use a summary to present career growth, focusing on past achievements, acquired skills, and familiarity with the industry.

By contrast, a resume objective focuses on abilities and relevant side project experience. That is why it works best for students and career switchers.

In both cases, keep the text to no more than 5–6 sentences, so think carefully about how to structure the paragraph.

3 Walmart resume summary examples

Review the following resume summary example and consider whether it sounds convincing.

Summary

Senior Pharmacist with more than 5 years of experience, responsible for department policies and procedures as well as client consultations.

WRONG

Not really. Why?

The applicant mentions 5 years of experience as a pharmacist, and the job title supports that claim.

However, there is nothing substantial to back it up. What happened during those 5 years? Were there any notable achievements or certifications?

On top of that, the next sentence reads more like a job description than a resume summary, which is unlikely to impress a recruiter.

So, what does a strong resume summary look like?

Consider the following example:

Summary

Responsible Cashier Manager with 4 years of experience seeking a similar position at Walmart in Benton, Texas. Skilled in cash handling, theft prevention, and teamwork, with a specialization in store layout and holiday decor planning. Friendly, personable, and fluent in English and Spanish.

RIGHT

The candidate not only explains their area of specialization, but also shows a clear focus on a specific position.

They also highlight their strengths and explain how those qualities can benefit Walmart while supporting their own future goals.

Even better, they speak both English and Spanish, which is especially valuable in locations that serve diverse communities.

Take a look at another strong sample:

Summary

Certified Forklift Operator with experience operating both high-lift and low-lift trucks, seeking a Forklift Driver position at any of Benton's Walmart locations. Achieved a 90% reduction in workplace accidents in a prior role at the Walgreen Company. Strong in vendor relations, inventory maintenance, and inventory management. Currently undergoing the Commercial Driver's License Program.

RIGHT

Showing career progress with your Walmart resume experience section

Want to know a secret?

Large corporations invest heavily in employer brand management. They want to look good in front of current and potential employees.

Very often, they even have videos to show for it.

You can get something useful from that too: a template for framing your work experience.

Think about the impact of your work. How does it affect customers or colleagues? Does it make your boss’s job easier? Include that in your resume.

Support your claims with data whenever possible. Show measurable, provable results. That is also why lying on your resume gets you nowhere.

It is hard to invent convincing stories about your work history if you have not actually lived them.

Not sure how to do it? We have prepared some samples to help visualize the concept.

3 Walmart resume experience examples

As always, we will start with what to avoid. Here is how Anya first approached writing the experience section:

Anya Kennedy

Cashier, CVS
02/2000 - 11/2004

  • Helped customers use the self-checkout system.
  • Handled cash.
  • Good knowledge of POS systems.
WRONG

The lack of attention to detail is hard to miss, from leaving out a company description to not linking the company website.

Almost every modern business has an online presence. While some employers need no introduction, lesser-known past companies should be briefly presented because they add context to your work experience.

Another missing detail is the location. Large corporations often have multiple branches, so when recruiters check your references, they need to know which office or contact is relevant.

Last but not least, avoid the dreadful “to-do list” approach to describing your work history.

Do not simply repeat the job description. That adds no value to your resume beyond parroting what Walmart is looking for.

Instead, you can reference the skills and tools listed in the job description, then use your own experience to show your level of expertise.

You can see the difference by comparing the first sample with the example below.

Anya Kennedy

Forklift Operator at Target Corporation

07/2017 - 04/2021 | Benton, TX

One of the largest big box department store retailers.

  • Decreased workplace accidents by 25% by introducing new inventory management methods.
  • Reduced spoiled produce by 42% by rearranging the warehouse layout.
  • Limited shrinkage to 1.5% by maintaining detailed inventory and activity logs.
RIGHT

This version feels more impressive, doesn’t it? Anya shows that she has reflected on her past performance and worked to improve herself.

Want another example? Check out the sample experience section below.

Anya Kennedy

Senior Pharmacist at Walgreen Company

01/2018 - 05/2022 Benton, TX

A leader in the health and wellness sector, specializing in providing up-to-date health information.

  • Doubled the number of new patient visits by providing timely and informative patient care.
  • Increased patient satisfaction rates by 129% by regularly re-examining prescriptions and recommending medications with fewer side effects.
  • Accelerated the patient consultation process by 80% by introducing faster methods for identifying ailments.
  • Stayed current on developments related to the COVID-19 virus by attending local and online seminars.
RIGHT

Social and tech abilities which appeal to Walmart hiring managers

You don’t need to be a genius to get hired, and not having every skill listed in the job description does not automatically limit your chances.

What matters is showing proactiveness in your resume. Walmart recruiters often value social strengths more than hard skills.

Of course, some roles require specific expertise. If you’re applying to be a pharmacist, for example, you need the right knowledge and credentials.

But Walmart also wants to be a place where every customer and employee is taken care of, so highlight your can-do attitude and willingness to learn.

Aim for the right balance between soft skills and core skills. Let’s look at each group one by one.

How not to overwhelm recruiters with technical jargon

Hiring managers often work closely with your potential manager so they understand what the role involves. They may know the field, but the department manager usually knows the position best.

So while hard skills are important and easy to discuss, avoid going too deep into technical detail. Recruiters are more impressed by the impact of your work.

A useful structure is: power or action verb + results + context or issue resolved.

In other words, use the C-A-R method: challenge - action - result.

Explain the challenge, describe the action you took, and share the result.

Here are some important skills for popular Walmart positions to help jumpstart your brainstorming.

Vital core skills for Walmart cashiers and cashier managers

  • Handle cash accurately and process payments.
  • Use POS systems confidently.
  • Stock shelves and restock products according to policy.
  • Perform backroom duties and support order management.
  • Sort products and maintain strong merchandise presentation.
  • Monitor food and produce, including code dating.
  • Follow sanitation standards and keep work areas clean.
  • Build positive relationships with clients, customers, and colleagues.
  • Help prevent shoplifting and support store safety.
  • Maintain stamina for active, fast-paced work.
  • Lift items heavier than 25 pounds when needed.
  • Use computer skills to complete daily tasks.
  • Apply product knowledge to assist customers effectively.

Key technical abilities for Walmart driver and forklift operators

  • Move, load, and unload inventory.
  • Organize products and merchandise.
  • Build working relationships with coworkers and vendors.
  • Manage freight flow effectively.
  • Operate and manage power equipment.
  • Maintain and manage merchandise supply.
  • Help ensure freight quality.
  • Perform equipment maintenance.
  • Keep the warehouse organized.
  • Carry out inspections and maintenance tasks.
  • Operate warehouse systems.
  • Maintain logs and reporting.
  • Identify damages and shrinkage.

Crucial hard skills for Walmart staff pharmacists and managers

  • Knowledge of current standards and procedures.
  • Strong patient consultation skills.
  • Understanding of medication substitutions and side effects.
  • Ability to help patients use medications properly.
  • Ability to follow and improve pharmacy procedures.
  • Skill in monitoring inventory levels.
  • Knowledge of proper medication storage.
  • HIPAA training.
  • Quality assurance knowledge.
  • Understanding of NAPRA and CDC guidelines.
  • Knowledge of medical insurance and billing.

How to translate your soft skills into verifiable achievements

It’s simple: use the same method you applied to your core abilities.

How?

Many people do not think about their social skills every day, let alone measure the impact those strengths have on others.

But if you have made someone’s life easier, that is an achievement you can highlight.

Take a look at the examples in the table below.

Strengths

Teamwork
Three-time winner of the Run for Charity team marathon organized by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Detail-oriented
Successfully appealed 50+ medication denial decisions for patients who had to switch to unsuitable alternatives and experienced medication side effects.
Organizational skills
Ensured holiday shopping ran smoothly by coordinating marketing campaigns with store procedures and anticipated foot traffic in advance.
RIGHT

Many people would not think to include something like running a marathon on a resume, especially if it seems unrelated to the job.

But in Walmart’s case, the example makes sense. Walmart emphasizes community and helping others, so mentioning a marathon can reflect the kind of candidate they want.

The same idea applies to the other two examples. They may be job-related, but more importantly, they show the applicant’s mindset.

These roles involve much more than handing out medication or simply planning a holiday. They are about creating an experience.

If you need ideas for what to include under your soft skills, consider the suggestions below:

Top social skills to have on your Walmart resume:

  • Customer service and customer relations.
  • Vendor relations and customer-focused support.
  • Empathy and understanding.
  • Communication and analytical skills.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving.
  • Innovation, creativity, and resourcefulness.
  • Agility, flexibility, and adaptability.
  • Mentorship and motivation skills.
  • Accountability, responsibility, and honesty.
  • Transparency and trustworthiness.
  • Collaboration, teamwork, and inclusivity.
  • Strategic thinking and risk assessment skills.
  • Curiosity and a growth mindset.
  • Resilience and a results-driven attitude.
  • Organization and time management skills.
  • People management skills and decision-making skills.
  • A personable, friendly, and high-performing approach.
  • Multitasking, prioritization, and attention to detail.

Do Walmart hiring managers have strict education requirements?

Yes and no. It depends on the position you’re applying for.

For most roles, Walmart typically requires only a high school diploma, an associate’s degree, or a license.

Unless you’re applying for a Pharmacist position, you usually won’t need a specialized degree. For that role, Walmart recruiters look for candidates with:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy
  • PharmD degree
  • FPGEE (NABP)
  • An ACPE Accredited Immunization training program license

If you don’t have much experience, include what you majored in, along with any relevant school and side projects you’ve completed.

Need more tips? Check out how to frame the education section on your resume.

Are there any certificates which can boost your chances?

Of course. The right certifications depend entirely on your career path, so focus on the ones your industry considers reputable.

For example, here are some of the top certifications for Sales Representatives:

11 Sales certificates to get noticed by Walmart recruiters

  • Retail Management Certificate.
  • Professional Credit Associate (PCA).
  • Certified Sales Development Representative (CSDR).
  • Certified Manager Certification.
  • Certified Sales Professional.
  • Certified Professional Sales Person Certification (CPSP).
  • Certified Inside Sales Professional (CISP).
  • Certified Professional Sales Leader (CPSL).
  • Certified Master Sales Professional.
  • Customer Service and Sales Certified Specialist.
  • Certified Sales Executive (CSE).

Is there anything else you can include in your Walmart resume?

  • Volunteer work

  • Languages (English, Spanish, ASL, etc.)

  • Hobbies and interests

  • Side projects

  • Awards and prizes

  • Cover letter

  • Research Walmart’s future goals and appeal to the company’s values

  • Choose the proper resume format to fit your level of expertise

  • Read the job descriptions carefully and make references to the skills in the ad

  • Check for typos and missing information in the resume header

  • Flaunt your best accomplishments in the summary box

  • Follow the CAR method when describing your work history

  • Balance out your core and soft skills when building the talent section
