How to write an IT director resume that gets interviews
IT directors are not typical IT hires. Recruiters often spend weeks or even months searching for the right candidate.
There’s a reason for that: an experienced IT manager can turn an enterprise into a global network, accelerate a startup’s growth, and help an outdated company become a market leader.
To win interviews at top companies, make sure your resume shows these qualities:
- Show impact. Your work needs to demonstrate clear results.
Bad example: set up a secure network
Good example: revamped network infrastructure, increasing uptime to 99,9%, and reduced the number of successful cyber attacks down to zero.
- Show scale. Your work should reflect company-wide or large-scale influence.
Bad example: implemented new data server
Good example: implemented enterprise-wide data hub to expand marketing, executive, and support operations over six states and three continents.
- Show leadership. Your IT director resume should highlight leadership skills, not micromanagement.
Bad example: developed a marketing plugin
Good example: led a team of data scientists to build a custom marketing solution that sped up average time to a customer by 50%.
If your goal is to prove you’re ready for the challenge, you need to be deliberate about how your resume makes that case.
Because you likely have many years of experience and specific areas of expertise to emphasize, a hybrid resume layout makes the most sense.
Start with a section that outlines your skills and backs them up with evidence. This can include examples or certifications. Be sure to use specific metrics to demonstrate impact and scale.
Here are some ideas for sections that you can use.
